Love & Inspiration #39

Love & Inspiration #39

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote I’m pondering:

  • “Sometimes the ‘wrong’ train can take us to the right place.”— Paulo Coelho

2) Book I’m Reading:

Ancient wisdom and perspectives,  and practical contemporary take-aways for healing, shared here in-depth by Alberto Villoldo, a classically trained medical anthropologist, who has studied shamanic healing for more than twenty years.

3) How to play the Infinite Game – 37 mins

I’m still thinking about this awesome talk

understanding the difference between a finite and an infinite mindset, and considering ways to adopt this exciting mindset shift to be able to see life more clearly through an infinite lens.

This is an excellent conversation to help let go of any competitive mindset, and inspire more resilience and more positive growth mindset for our businesses and personal lives.

4) Free Oracle App I’m Loving:

I LOVE receiving oracle cards as gifts, and this is the latest one that I’ve been getting into.

Oracle cards are not meant to predict the future per se, but rather give you insight into the present moment – a fresh perspective to view a situation.

Have a try  – this one is great.  It’s easy to use, free, and online, and I find it’s very insightful!

5) Music

Sing along, stretch out your body, close your eyes and just be.

I’ve loved this class mantra – dub remix track for almost a decade.

This is a quintessential yoga class playlist favourite for many a-teacher, and I know you’ll LOVE it too.

So much LOVE & Blessings to you,

XOXO

Love & Inspiration #39

Love & Inspiration #38

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote:

  • “They who are steady in eating and in rest, and in their work, do their duty; they who, are steady in sleeping and waking, they will be able, training Yoga, to mitigate sufferings of their material lives…” – Bhagavad Gita 6:18

2) Celebrating Navaratri

Navaratri is an auspicious time in the Vedic calendar dedicated to honouring and celebrating the goddess energy within us all, male and female.

I’ve had the privilege this past week of sharing goddess mantras with my soul sister Lindsey Wise for 2 powerful Navaratri Yoga classes here in California, with Emily Perry at Bhakti Fest ,and Hannah Muse for Ygoa Church Santa Cruz, and have been feeling so much the forca feminina within.

Nava means nine in Sanskrit while Ratri means nights. This is a nine day celebration that is divided into three parts. The first three days are dedicated to the goddess Durga. Her warrior spirit cleanses, shifts, uproots, changes and transforms. Think of her as tilling the soil, prior to planting seeds.

The goddesses Durga, Saraswati and Lakshmi symbolize these parts of life and Nature, while also being parts of our own innate Self. The three of them together represent our wholeness, the trinity of life, alive in and around us. These three goddesses also connect to Shakti, the goddess who gives the spark of life to every being, to Nature, and to existence.

lakshmiThe next three days of celebration are dedicated to Lakshmi. Her abundance, nurturing, and wealth offer nourishment and support to us on all levels of life.

Finally, we have three days dedicated to goddess Saraswati. Saraswati gives us knowledge, understanding, wisdom, creativity and artistry. She is the rasayana (or healing balm) if you will to close these nine sacred days of festivities. Together, these three goddesses bring wholeness, renewal and the life giving offerings of Shakti.

It is at this time that we can connect to these three goddesses most easily—inside of us, and around us. Because of this, Navaratri is considered a very sacred and powerful time of year—one that influences our inner and outer experience of life for months to come.

To connect with the goddesses more closely, make special offerings on your altar for them during the nine days. You can also dedicate your actions and intentions to them for greater communication.

3) Pranayama / Breathing Technique:

Have you tried this yet?  It’s getting cold here in North America, so my friend suggested I try the Wim Hof breath.  Everyone and there cousin seems to be getting into Wim Hof  – the “ice man” and his method, so I decided to try it…

This video shares a really super simple practice, straight from the source – essentially it’s 30 x rounds of the fully belly-chest-head breathing, followed by an increasingly long retention.

What I discovered is that this particular Wif Hoff breathing method is simply a form of pranayama, which is one my main personal practices.  There are more than 50 known types of pranayama techniques, all with multiple positive benefits.  What I experienced right away in trying this practice, is what I often feel with my regular pranayama practice –   stress relief, increased clarity, presence, concentration and well-being.

Give it a try and let me know what you think.

4) Learning a bit more about Positive Psychology:

Positive Psychology is the scientific study of human flourishing, and an applied approach to optimal functioning. It has also been defined as the study of the strengths and virtues that enable individuals, communities and organisations to thrive (Gable & Haidt, 2005, Sheldon & King, 2001).

I’ve always been fascinated by the human being, our behaviours, thought patterns, how both genetics and life experiences manifest in how we interface with reality.  I did my first University Bachelors degree in Psychology.  At that time, we learned a lot about when things go wrong…abnormal psychology, the brain and how to treat “problems”.

Once I started getting deeper into Yoga, what became more relevant for me, what how I could use the wisdom, knowledge and understandings of science and psychology theory to thrive more in each arising present moment – essentially how to be more happy and awake.

5) Mantra Music for the Goddess

We sing this mantra to the fierce aspect of the goddess, as we help to liberate ourselves from the ever-deep layers of the lower self, which can seem to come back more and more powerfully, especially when we thought we had already dealt with and integrated that aspect of our being.

Love & Inspiration #39

Love & Inspiration #37

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote:

  • “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has”. – Margaret Mead

2) Book I’m Reading

This New York Times bestseller is an easy-to-read, insightful and engaging guide to meditation as a rational practice that is informed by neuroscience and psychology.

3) Practice I’m getting back into:

I’ve been a fairly consistent journal writer throughout my life, and often think of my relationship to pen on paper as my most trusted therapist.  It feels really good, cathartic, insightful and space-making to get back into this as a daily practice.  Join me!

Morning Pages, known as “the bedrock tool of a creative recovery” are three pages of longhand, stream of consciousness writing,
done first thing in the morning. *There is no wrong way to do Morning Pages*– they are not high art. They are not even “writing.”

They are about anything and everything that crosses your mind– and they are for your eyes only. Morning Pages provoke, clarify, comfort, cajole, prioritise and synchronise the day at hand. Do not over-think Morning Pages: just put three pages of anything on the page…and then do three more pages tomorrow.”

4) Music I adore:

Grammy-nominated for best world music album.  i LOVE this album and have listened hundreds of times at least.  You’ll love it.

5) Movement that’s Inspiring me:

  • Global Climate Strike  – Sept 20-27th – Greta Thunberg’s inspired #climatestrike,#fridaysforfuture

What’s happening today is an incredible landmark planetary event: Over 4 million people have been protesting for #ClimateStrike  #FridaysForFuture ‬in163 countries, and counting…

I am experiencing a full body “YES!!!!” to this movement, and so grateful to everyone who is taking a stand, and to all those people like you and I who are becoming more and more open and curious about our own carbon footprint and personal responsibility, and what actual life changes we can adopt to help #bethechange.

This is an incredible opportunity for collective evolution to support the common dream.

6 ideas we can consider to support climate action:

1) Eat less Meat

2) Walk rather than drive

3) Avoid single-use plastics

4) Plant more trees 🌱

5) Make a stand – Share how important this is with local businesses and change-makers

6) Spend more time in wonder, awe, curiosity, and gratitude, remembering that we as individuals and as a collective and completely interconnect and interdependent

Love & Inspiration #36

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote:

  • ““We don’t see things as they are, we see them as we are.”― Anaïs Nin

2) Book I’m gushing about

Empowering, inspiring, practical.  Everything is Figuroutatable is simultaneously a mantra, a mindset and a life philosophy.

I am huge big fan of Marie Forleo and everything she creates.  I often credit her for helping me find, and keep finding my way as an entrepreneur and motivated, inspired human.

I cannot remember the last time I underlined and highlighted so much in one book.  She has so many great, memorable and incredible helpful one-liner philosophies, and I highly highly highly recommend this book or anyone, especially if you are at all feeling stuck in any area of your life.

Some of my fav and most practical one-liner highlights:

  • Start before you’re ready
  • Define your Dream
  • Progress over Perfection
  • Try it before you deny it
  • If it’s important enough you’ll make time for it, otherwise you’ll make an excuse
  • The truth of Can’t vs. Won’t

3) Enneagram Test – ~15 mins

One of the absolute best and most complete personality systems and “user-manuals” I’ve ever had the opportunity to study is the Enneagram.

If you spend any length of time with me personally, eventually we are gonna start talking Enneagram, because I love it and think its the greatest thing ever.

Through discovering and learning to understand  our “type” we can begin to know and understand ourselves, our core fears and motivations and how to bring ourselves into more self-awareness, balance, wellness and growth.

Rather than being yet another box or label to put ourselves into it,  I feel that learning the Enneagram has helped me to, as my dear friend and Enneagram Expert Lubna Shareif describes, “step out of the box of who we are”.

Read Lubna’s article – Why Learn the Enneagram, here, and even set yourself up for a consultation to be able to begin navigating this masterful system.

and let me know what type feels resonant for you! I’m always curious and excited to learn more about my people!

4) Music

Rootsy, soulful, hip-hoppy, folky, traditional somehow, yet totally new.  I love the genre-bending tapestry of voices and creations of these beautiful sisters. I chose this song to share with you today, but I love pretty much everything I’ve heard from Rising Appalachia.  Check ‘em out!

5) Ayurvedic Self-Care Practice

I just started tongue scraping a couple months ago after one my super knowledgable Ayurvedic Consultant friends, had one look at my tongue and told me I was toxic!

I knew she was sharing from a helpful and empowering place, so I gave it a try and haven’t looked back.

Scraping our tongues everyday, according to the ancient sister science to Yoga of Ayurveda, can help give you a better understanding of your overall oral and general health, as well as stimulate internal organs and improve digestion.

Love & Inspiration #39

Love & Inspiration #35

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote:

  • I think it is essential sometimes to go into retreat, to stop everything that you have been doing, to stop your beliefs and experiences completely and look at them anew, not keep on repeating like machines whether you believe or don’t believe. You would let fresh air into your minds.” — Jiddu Krishnamurti

2) Bodhisattva Prayer for All Humanity

  • Bodhisattva Prayer for All Humanity  – Shantideva, Indian Buddhist sage 700 A.D.

I love this prayer because it reminds me that we all carry within us the capacity to awaken, if we so choose, and that this awakening process is an ongoing, personal, continual and life-long journey.  It also reminds me that what matters is how we show up in the world, how we respond to life and its challenges, and in the face of challenges, its reminds me that we can help each other and approach the challenge with love and compassion rather than fear and anger.

“May I be a guard for those who need protection,

a guide for those on the path,

a boat, a raft, a bridge for those who wish to cross the flood.

May I be a lamp in the darkness,

a resting place for the weary,

a healing medicine for all who are sick,

a vase of plenty, a tree of miracles.

And for the boundless multitudes of living beings,

may I bring sustenance and awakening,

enduring like the earth and sky

until all beings are freed from sorrow

and all are awakened.

3) 5 Love Languages Quiz

Understanding our own love language, and those of our loved ones, has for many, including myself, been a game changer.

I have a friend for example, whose husband came home every day from work, cooked her dinner, gave her a foot massage and yet they fought all the time because all she wanted was for him to ask her how she was, and about her day.  They were simply speaking different love language.

The premise of Gary Chapman’s 5 Love Languages is simple.  Each person gives and receives love in a certain language, and learning how to be more fluent in the love languages of yourself and your loved ones, can help you to better understand and express your needs thereby strengthening and enhancing your relationships.

The 5 Love Language are: Acts of Service,Physical Touch, Receiving Gifts, Quality time, and words of affirmation.

What are your primary love languages?

Love & Inspiration #39

Love & Inspiration #34

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote:

  • “At the core of our deepest longing is to be friends with ourselves, to hold and touch and dance and play with the pieces of soul that sparkle and form our true being”. – Matt Licata

2) Self-Compassion Guided Meditations

Are you going through a challenging moment? Feel triggered? Dark moon and new moon, can be especially challenging times of the cycle for some of us.

Self-compassion work is some of the most powerful way to access loving kindness towards ourself, and Dr. Kristin Neff offers us this incredible resource to help learn about self-compassion.

I experimented with this particular “sooth soften allow” meditation mentioned above this past week when some old emotions resurfaced, and I found it valuable.  You may like to choose a different meditation to try.  Let me know what you think!

3) Mystic Mamma

This is my go to source to learn more about new and full moon astrology.  Hope you love it!

*NEW MOON* in Virgo brings forth healing, calling for purification so love can flow through.

We are in an age of healing ourselves and our planet, and that means awakening our collective mindset to a vibrational and energetic understanding of our universe.

We are each called to task and it begins in our body.

Her body is our body. We are not separate from Her.

Our task is to feel, work through and release all that blocks love from freely flowing through us.

We have so much collective grief and trauma that we carry in our root chakras and in our womb centers.

As we work with loving awareness to release the fear, the rage and the grief, we will begin to feel the regeneration and flow of our Life Force as it activates our creative powers.

Virgo reminds us that through our Earthly embodiment we become the Chalice.

She teaches us to ground into our Earth and offers her intuitive and discerning gifts to help us sort and map what is needed and what will serve the whole.

Her way is one of love, of caring and compassion for all living things.

4) Book I’m Reading

One of the topics we share in depth on our 200 Hour Yoga Teacher Training is Trauma-informed Yoga teaching practice.  This area is starting to get a lot more attention in the Yoga world as we realise that it is highly common for people to experience the devastating and pervasive effects of trauma.

Trauma is a response to a deeply distressing or disturbing event, that can overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope, causing feelings of helplessness, a diminished sense of self and ability to feel the full range of emotions and experiences.

In this powerful, informative and well-researched book, one of the world’s experts on traumatic stress offers a bold new paradigm for treatment, moving away from standard talking and drug therapies and towards an alternative approach that heals mind, brain and body.

5) Savasana Music

New moons are a naturally more reflective time.  I like to take this nature given opportunity to slow down and take time to go inward.  Pop on this playlist after a practice, or as your practice, and melt!  Do you have a favourite savasana song?  I’d LOVE to hear it!

So much LOVE & Blessings to you sweet one!

1) Quote:

  • “Yoga does not change the way we see things, it transforms the person who sees”. – B.K.S Iyengar

2) Poem by Jeff Foster

Falling in Love with Where you Are

Dying to all
you think you know

Letting go of the image
of how life ‘should’ be

Sinking into the vast mystery
of the present moment

Embracing change and loss
as misunderstood friends

Falling in love
with where you are

This is the path
for those who know
there is no path

Only endless destinations
and never-ending beginnings

– Jeff Foster

3) Inspiring Talk from Russell Brand – 8 mins

In this short video, Russlee Brand gives a good and simple explanation on meditation  – how we are not our thoughts and feelings – and mantra and how it works to focus the thinking mind – like giving a child a yo-yo, so that we are not identified and controlled by the mind, so that we can be in higher service.

4) Music Playlist for Yoga Practice

I love practicing to music to help me get in the flow zone.  I made this 13 track playlist a couple years ago, and it stands the test of time. Put it on for background music, a gentle dance, or get some sun salutation movement medicine happening!

I’m brewing some new playlists too, so let me know if there are any standout trax that you’d like to hear more.

5)🎧 Francie’s Interview with Daniela Garza Rois

“Devotion is my teacher…Before anything you are in life, put the word “devoted” in front of it. A devoted mother, a devoted sister, a devoted child…this way you know that everything you do in life in an offering, and everything that life brings to you is also an offering”.-  Daniela Garza Rios

2) Full Moon Mantra: Purna = Fullness

The meaning of this beautiful mantra, an invocation mantra from the Upanishads: From Wholeness Comes Wholeness

Om Puurnnam-Adah Puurnnam-Idam Puurnnaat-Puurnnam-Udacyate |
Puurnnasya Puurnnam-Aadaaya Puurnnam-Eva-Avashissyate ||

Om, That is Wholeness, This Wholeness
From Wholeness comes Wholeness
Though this Wholeness is taken from that Wholeness
This Wholeness remains Whole
Om Peace, peace, peace

3) The Psoas – “Muscle of the Soul”

This article is a great introduction to the psoas muscle, and how to stretch and relax it.

Included you’ll also find a lovely 5 minute practice sequence for stretching the psoas.

I did my first ever TRE – Trauma Release class the other day, and got re-interested and curious about the elusive “psoas” muscle. The Psoas muscle (pronounced so-as) is the deepest muscle of the human body that connects the upper and lower body, and is activated in times of stress and trauma.  It affects our structural balance, muscular integrity, flexibility, strength, range of motion, joint mobility, and organ functioning.

According to Liz Koch, the psoas is “far more than a core stabilising muscle; it is an organ of perception composed of bio-intelligent tissue and “literally embodies our deepest urge for survival, and more profoundly, our elemental desire to flourish”.

Feeling the full moon power giving you energy?

5) My New Favourite Self-Care Ritual

  • Facial Gua Sha – Ancient Traditional Chinese Medicine( TCM) Technque

I love my new jade self-care tool. I’m a person who tends to hold a lot of expression in the face.  Many of us are.  Notice. See if you can spend a moment now, to just consciously relax every single muscle of the face.  Notice this a few times a day and relax.

A few friends have been talking about Gua Sha recently, so I got curious and ordered one from the internet.  My immediate response is that I need to get many to give away as presents.  It feels great.  The face likes being touched, and you can feel the benefits of this self massage immediately.  You can read about how to give yourself the ultimate gua sha facial here.

Gua sha is a Traditional Chinese massage technique for opening the neck and face.  It improves skin complexion by relaxing the muscles, improving blood flow, supporting microcirculation, reducing stagnation, and draining lymph.  It has enormous anti-ageing and beauty benefits, and it helps boost circulation of oxygen and nutrients to our face and helping to move stagnant lymph and wastes away from our face. This helps reduce puffiness, stagnation and swelling.  Facial Gua Sha can also help relieve headaches, sleep, and stress

5) 12 Steps of Spiritual Recovery

“Spiritual life can usefully be pictured as a progressive recovery from the addiction of ordinary life, which is inherently schizoid and hence lacking in fullness and bliss. The well-known twelve-step program of recovery used in the literature of addiction also serve as a convenient model for spiritual process. Spiritual recovery is an uncovering of the spiritual dimension, whether we call it transcendental Self, God, Goddess, or the Ultimate – the dimension that is ordinarily covered up by the self-divided ego-personality, especially when it comes under the influence of the rational consciousness.

Here are the 12 steps of spiritual recovery:

Here are the 12 steps of spiritual recovery:

1. We admit the fact that our ordinary human condition, based on the dualistic perception of life, is a stubborn habit that we normally conceal from ourselves through denial.

2. We begin to look and ask for guidance in our effort to cultivate a new outlook that embraces the spiritual vision of the interconnectedness of all existence. The means of doing so are varied from supportive spiritual environments to uplifting books.

3. We initiate positive changes in our behaviour, which affirm that new outlook. It is not enough to read and talk about spiritual principles. Spirituality is intrinsically a practical affair.

4. We practice self-understanding; that is, we accept conscious responsibility for noticing our automatic programs and where they fall short of our new understanding of life.

5. We make commitment to undergoing the catharsis, or purification, necessary to change our old cognitive and emotional patterns and stabilise the new outlook and disposition, replacing the egoic habit of splitting everything into irreconcilable opposites with an integrative.

6. We learn to be flexible and open to life so that we can continue to learn and grow on the basis of our new outlook.

7. We practice humility in the midst of our endeavours to mature spiritually. In this way we avoid the danger of psychic inflation.

8. We assume responsibility for what we have understood about life and the principles of spiritual recovery, applying our understanding to all out relationships so that we can be a benign influence int eh world.

9. Guided by our new outlook, we work on the integration of our multiply divided psyche.

10. We cultivate real self-discipline in all matters, great and small.

11. We increasingly practice spiritual communion, which opens us to that dimension of existence where we are all connected. Through such communion and through continued growth in self-understanding, we become transparent to ourselves.

12. We open ourselves to the possibility of bliss, the breakthrough of the transcendental reality into our consciousness, whereby the ego principle is unhinged and we fully recover our spiritual identity. Through this awakening the world becomes transparent to us and we are made whole.

Love & Inspiration #39

Love & Inspiration #30

Here are your fresh Love & Inspirations for the week ahead:

1) Quote:

  • We are like islands in the sea, separate on the surface but connected in the deep.- William James

2) Beautiful Remix

  • Lilac Wine  – Nina Simone & Jeff Buckley – (Marco Rigamonti Rai Tunes Remix)

I have long loved Jeff Buckley and also Nina Simone.  This is such a beautiful downtempo remix.

Perfect for a little 6 minute boogie or Yoga flow in your bedroom,

3) Soul Session interview with Joe Dispenza

“Thoughts are the language of the brains, feelings are the language of the body”.

Wanna know what’s possible for your life?

In this masterful talk, high-profile neuroscientist Dr Joe Dispenza talks about quantum physics, neuroscience, brain chemistry, biology, and the nature of consciousness.  He explores what its like living in survival vs. living in creation. He unpacks the different types of stress and how they arise, emotions, meditation how-to and the brain states experienced within both waking and meditative states, and so much more.

As you know, I love hearing from you!  The past couple weeks, 2 different friends – Mel & Nadia have shared Joe Dispenza talks with me, and I’ve finally spent some time listening, and WOW!  Feeling inspired.

There are so many gems in this talk…not a huge fan of the background music tbh, but still so much gold here.

4) 🎧 Ayahuasca, Yoga Nidra & the Changing Landscape of the Yoga World

In this Episode, Simone shares about:

  • The 3 phases of the Yogi’s Journey
  • Why she’s letting go of teaching 200 hour trainings after 10 years and over 500+ graduates
  • The changing landscape of the Yoga World, and the irony of Yoga and social media
  • Yoga Nidra– Yogic sleep as an effective and useful way to integrate healing –especially for trauma work, addictions, anxiety, depression, and stress in general
  • Symbol of Aum as it relates to the brain states that we experience in Yoga Nidra, Medicine work and daily life – alpha, beta, theta, delta, gama.
  • Vision quests, Rights of Passage & the value of exploring different cultural and experiential lenses and perspectives
  • Bridging Yoga and Plant Medicine World
  • Ceremony & Dieting with Plant Medicines like Ayahuasca, Wachuma – San Pedro – What are they? Why are they being used? Who are they of benefit to? What does it mean to feel “called?
  • How the plant intelligences work: Hint: They give you what you need, not what you want…
  • Re-defining self-practice and it’s important role in integrating transformation

5) Yoga Nidra with Simone – 36 minutes

Yoga Nidra the ancient and sacred science of Yogic Sleep.  Yoga Nidra is said to be so powerful and effective in regenerating the body-mind, that 1 hour is said to be equivalent to 4 hours of regular sleep.  It has proven benefits including: Increasing joy and well-being, decreasing stress, anxiety and depression, improving sleep and energy, and helping us to clear habits, beliefs and patterns that no longer serve us. Enjoy this magical practice and discover the depths of stillness with Simone.
