Yoga 101:

What does Namaste mean?

Na·ma·ste /ˈnäməˌstā/

exclamation

  1. a respectful greeting said when giving a namaskar.

noun

  1. another term for namaskar.

Yoga literally means “union” or “to yoke” our everyday selves with our highest most divine selves. Yoga is a powerful tool that teaches us not only how to live a life of balance, peace, harmony, strength and flexibility on all levels, but also to help us remember that
we are all connected and related.

Namaste is generally the first and last greeting you hear shared in a Yoga class.

It’s the common form of greeting in many south Asian and Hindu cultures and countries such as Nepal,  and India – the birthplace of Yoga.

Often accompanied by a slight bow, and hand gesture, anjali mudra, where hands are brought together in a prayer like position in front of the heart, to symbolise heart connection, honouring, worshiping, prayer, balance, union of dual nature, humility and internal focus

On a very simple level, namaste is a greeting – a gesture of acknowledgement and way of saying “hello”.

On a deeper more esoteric level, Namaste is  a deep recognition of the interconnected nature of being human.

One translation I’ve heard that resonates with me personally, is that

“The light in me, see’s the light in you, and I know that we are One”.

In fact,  you can replace the word light with any human quality:

The fear in me, see’s the fear in you and I know that we are one.

The frustration in me, see’s the frustration in you and I know that we are one.

The loneliness in me, see’s the loneliness in you and I know that we are one.

The joy in me, see’s the joy in you and I know that we are one…

In Yoga, as in many other cultures, for example, the mayan culture of the Americas who greet each other with the words –  “in lakesh” – translated as I am another yourself,

the main objective is to remember that we are all related, all interconnected, and intrinsically interwoven together in the greater fabric of life.
